The Shaker Lakes are vital assets for both Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights. Our local officials are going along with the Sewer District’s plan to destroy the historic dam and remove Horseshoe Lake. Their plan would convert the lake into a floodplain with a potential park nearby, despite the Sewer District admitting they won’t cover the upfront costs of creating the park nor fund any ongoing maintenance. The Sewer District’s plan puts Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights taxpayers on the hook for millions of dollars while permanently destroying this treasured regional asset.
FOHSL has worked with a team of experts and developed a financially viable plan that meets the Sewer District’s requirements for stormwater management AND Saves Horseshoe Lake. See the Horseshoe Lake Restoration Plan that we presented to our public officials here.
Generations of Shaker and Cleveland Heights’ residents fought for decades to protect and preserve these lakes. The fight to save them helped define our communities. We continue that legacy today, by showing our government officials that the community stands up for our historic, natural, and cultural resources with a solution that works for everyone, preserving Horseshoe Lake while meeting the goals of both cities and the Sewer District.
